Alex Cora Issues Updates On Injured Red Sox Relievers

The Boston Red Sox bullpen has been used frequently this season. They rank 11th in baseball and sixth in the American League in terms of innings pitched.

The usage, at least in part, has led to several names making their way onto the major league roster. Jorge Alcala and Jordan Hicks were both acquired to alleviate some of the load the relievers were handling.

More reinforcements could be on the way in the form of Justin Slaten and Liam Hendriks. Alex Cora spoke to the media before Monday’s game and said that Hendriks has begun playing catch, while Slaten is working with plyos in the gym, but isn’t on the mound quite yet.

Slaten has been out since May 29th with right shoulder inflammation. His absence has been felt as the Red Sox have tried other relievers in high-leverage spots he had been handling. At the time of his injury, Slaten held the highest average leverage index when entering games.

On the other hand, Hendriks was yet to earn the trust of his manager to pitch in close games. The Australian was placed on the injured list one day before Slaten. Hendriks’ average leverage index was much lower. None of the pitchers who ranked below him in that metric are still on the active roster.

This season was Hendriks’ first in several years due to injuries. His fastball velocity never quite returned to where it was at his peak, and he had trouble locating at times. Relievers are fickle, though, and some time away could be helpful for Hendriks.

It remains to be seen when either reliever will be able to return to the mound. The All-Star break is around the corner, and with neither of their returns imminent, the rest will be much needed.
