Red Sox Rival Loses Another Key Arm To Tommy John Surgery

The Boston Red Sox dealt with a tough stretch where injuries hit the team hard during the first couple of months of the 2025 season. Yet recent updates on the progress of Masataka Yoshida, Alex Bregman and Tanner Houck point toward a Red Sox team that could be back and playing at full strength sometime after the All-Star break.

The same cannot be said of the New York Yankees. After Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole underwent Tommy John surgery during spring training, the Yankees’ rotation took another major hit when right-hander Luis Gil was placed on the 60-day injured list on March 26 due to a right lat strain. New York received more bad news on Saturday when the team announced that right-hander Clarke Schmidt will require Tommy John surgery.

The news regarding Schmidt’s injury arrives during a stretch where the Yankees have gone 3-7 over their last 10 games and have fallen three games back of the American League East leading Toronto Blue Jays in the division.

With starting pitcher Ryan Yarbrough also currently on the 15-day IL, it appears likely the Yankees will aggressively pursue starting pitching before the July 31 trade deadline. With names like the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen rumored to be available, Yankees’ senior vice president and general manager Brian Cashman will likely be on the hunt for rotation upgrades over the next few weeks.

The Red Sox and Yankees will meet again for a four-game series on August 21 in The Bronx.
