NBA Rumors: Former Celtics Star Will Sign Massive New Contract

Kyrie Irving is about to get paid.

The former Boston Celtics star reportedly declined his $43 million option for next season in order to sign a three-year contract with the Dallas Mavericks, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The new deal will be worth $119 million and includes a player option for the 2027-28 season, according to Charania.

By reportedly agreeing to the new contract, Irving is committing to rebuilding the Mavericks alongside Anthony Davis and presumed No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg. Dallas has the top pick in Wednesday’s NBA draft and is expected to select the former Duke star.

But the deal won’t pay immediate dividends for the Mavericks since Irving is still recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee. The 33-year-old will be sidelined for the start of next season but hopes to return by January, Charania reports.

The three-time All-NBA selection became the focal point of the Mavericks’ offense in February following the shocking trade of Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Irving spent two seasons in Boston, following his trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers before the 2017-18 season. He famously promised to re-sign with the Celtics before eventually leaving as a free agent to sign with the Nets.

Brooklyn sent Irving to the Mavericks before 2023 NBA trade deadline.

Irving, a nine-time All-Star, made his NBA debut in 2011 with the Cavaliers and won Rookie of the Year honors. He teamed with LeBron James in Cleveland to win the 2016 NBA title.

Irving has career averages of 23.7 points and 5.6 assists per game over 14 NBA seasons.
