Red Sox Announce Promising Health Update On Wilyer Abreu
All signs point toward the Boston Red Sox having a major contributor back in the line up very soon.
The team announced that right fielder and 2024 Gold Glove Award winner Wilyer Abreu has been sent to Triple-A Worcester to begin a rehab assignment after being placed on the 10-day injured list June 9 with a strained left oblique. He’s eligible to return June 20.
Abreu was last seen on the field against the New York Yankees on June 8 when he pitch-hit for Rob Refsnyder and took over right field during the Red Sox eventual 11-7 victory in The Bronx.
The timing of Abreu’s rehab assignment couldn’t be better, especially after the team dealt Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday.
Prior to being sidelined, Abreu was batting .245 with 13 home runs and 32 RBI. With manager Alex Cora’s lineup a work in progress following the Devers deal, it will be interesting to see where Abreu bats in the lineup when he returns.
The Red Sox are currently on the road playing a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners, but it’s very possible Abreu could rejoin the team Friday when he’s eligible to be activated off the injured list. The Red Sox will face Devers and the Giants in that series.
The Red Sox will play game two of their series against the Mariners on Tuesday. Walker Buehler (5-4) opposes Bryan Woo (5-4) as the team tries to extend its six-game win streak.
