Why Tottenham are not allowed to sell Heung-min Son until August as they delay decision on captain's future
While Heung-min Son’s future at Tottenham remains up in the air, a new update has shed light on why Spurs have decided to delay a decision on their captain until the latter stages of the transfer window.
Several reliable sources have reported that Son is now closer to an exit from Spurs than he ever has been after fulfilling his ambition of lifting a trophy with Tottenham.
Son has been heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, with reports indicating that the Lilywhites may cash in on the 32-year-old if a big-money offer arrives from the Middle East.
It has been suggested by some outlets over recent days that Son is open to working with Thomas Frank if the Dane wants to keep him, with former Bayer Leverkusen man believing that he still has a lot to offer at the highest level.
Tottenham set to delay Heung-min Son decision until Asia tour
A new report in BBC Sport has now claimed that Tottenham’s pre-season tour of South Korea is emerging as an important factor in the club’s decision on their captain.
The outlet says that Son continues to attract heavy interest from the Middle East after entering the final year of his Tottenham contract.
However, sources within Spurs have indicated that any potential exit from the club this summer is likely to be delayed until after the club’s pre-season tour to Asia.
Tottenham take on Arsenal in a pre-season friendly on July 31 before facing off against Newcastle in Seoul three days later, and the forward’s unavailability for those games will risk complications with the tour organisers.
It is explained that Son is crucial to the commercial appeal of Tottenham’s visit, with Tottenham having committed to his involvement in various activities during the tour.
As a result, the publication asserts that it would take an offer way above the forward’s valuation for Spurs to consider selling the player before they jet off to Asia.
Son refused to sign a longer deal with Spurs
Meanwhile, The Times go one step further and claim that Tottenham are contractually obliged to play their captain in the friendly against Newcastle in Seoul.
Very interestingly, the outlet asserts that when Spurs exercised the option to extend Son’s contract by one year back in January, they wanted him to commit to a longer-term deal, mainly due to his commercial value to the club.
However, the forward, who will turn 33 next month, allegedly refused to sign a multi-year extension at the time.
