Man United identify first-choice target for problematic position, a deal will be expensive

Manchester United have been linked with Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi.

The Red Devils have made the Italian their first choice for the goalkeeping position, according to Tutto Atalanta.

Atalanta are open to selling their star goalkeeper. They are ready to part ways with Carnesecchi for a fee between €45 and €50 million.

The Bergamo outfit have already set sights on Alex Meret, who is set to leave Napoli as a free agent to replace the Italian goalie.

Atalanta have a good relationship with United, having sold Rasmus Hojlund and Amad Diallo to the English giants. This could help in negotiations for Carnesecchi.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper had a decent campaign with Atalanta in Serie A last season.

He made 2.9 saves per game and kept 13 clean sheets in 34 games. Only three goalkeepers in the Italian top flight recorded more shutouts than him.

United are unlikely to sanction a move for Carnesecchi

United would like to buy a new goalkeeper due to Andre Onana’s unreliability. The Cameroonian made five errors leading to goals in the Premier League and Europa League last term.

Altay Bayindir has failed to challenge the former Ajax star. With the World Cup on the horizon, the Turkey international could leave United this summer for more game time.

With Onana’s unreliability and Bayindir’s inability to challenge him, it is understandable that United are exploring a move for Carnesecchi.

However, the Manchester outfit are unlikely to make a big-money move for another shot-stopper without selling Onana, making a move for Carnesecchi doubtful.

Manager Ruben Amorim reportedly enjoys a ‘warm working relationship’ with Onana, suggesting that the Cameroon international will likely remain United’s first-choice goalkeeper next season.

In addition, United have prioritised bolstering their attack in this transfer window and may not strengthen other areas unless they have an irresistible opportunity to do so.
