Patriots Quarterback Drake Maye Acknowledges Flaw In His Game

NFL Minicamp is underway, and while we won’t see game action for some time, that doesn’t mean analysts don’t have opinions about what the season ahead will hold.

The New England Patriots won just four games in quarterback Drake Maye’s rookie season, but that hasn’t stopped fans from getting excited about the 2025 outlook.

While last year’s team was led by first-year head coach Jerod Mayo, the 2025 Patriots will come with much more experience. Mike Vrabel should be a steadying force on the sidelines, and receivers Stefon Diggs and Mack Hollins provide some proven talent on the outside.

Following Monday’s practice, Maye was asked about how he deals with high expectations after a year where few expected the Patriots to be a factor in the postseason.

“The Patriots are used to winning, and that’s what we’re trying to get back to,” Maye said in his post-practice availability. “That pressure is what fuels you to be out here, what fuels you to get the rep right in practice.”

To reach the expectations people have set for them, the offense will need to cut down on the turnovers. Their 23 giveaways placed them in the bottom half of the league last season.

Maye acknowledged the flaw in his own game and cited his desire to improve in that area.

“I have to do my part in taking what’s open and taking the first thing,” Maye told the media. “I tend to wait for the big one and hold the ball, and it’s not always open.”

Maye showcased his downfield accuracy and arm strength last season, but improved decision-making will go a long way in getting the Patriots back to the playoffs.
