Robert Lewandowski sets timelines for his stay at Barcelona: The end seems near
At 36 years old, Robert Lewandowski continues to defy the odds. The Polish striker finished second in the 2024/2025 top scorer rankings among Europe’s top five leagues, netting an impressive 42 goals—just one shy of Kylian Mbappé, who is ten years his junior. His goals were instrumental in Barcelona’s triple crown this season: LaLiga, Copa del Rey, and Spanish Super Cup.
Still, Lewandowski is realistic about time catching up with him. In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, he shared his thoughts on the future: “Yes, my age is a bit… how can I put it? I can say it like this—just numbers. I feel very good physically and mentally. After the injury, I felt a little worse than before, but that’s normal,” he said optimistically.
He added, “With my age, I’m very happy because I know I’m still physically well-prepared for a full season. I can continue to play at the highest level for at least one more year.”
Looking back at the season with Barça, Lewandowski acknowledged some bumps in the road. “We had a tough moment toward the end of last year, but that’s normal with such a young team. After we lost to Atlético, I said it was better to go through that then, not later. From the start of the year to the end of the season, we played very well and won convincingly—not just 1-0 or 2-0, but scoring plenty of goals.”
He continued: “I think it was almost a perfect season. We won LaLiga, Copa del Rey, and the Supercopa, and made it to the Champions League semifinals—just short of the final. But that’s football. We should be proud not only of the titles but of how we played. Fans saw a team with heart, and that means a lot.”
What’s next after his Barcelona contract ends in 2026?
“I think I have enough time to decide what I want after next season. I can still play at a high level, like I did this year. But there are other things outside of football that could influence my thinking. That’s why it’s too early to make a decision. For now, I just want to rest, then focus on preseason and prepare well.”
He concluded: “I’m confident I’ll be in great shape. We have a few weeks to get ready. I’ve really enjoyed playing with this team and I’m proud to be a part of it.”
