Tottenham just ticked a major box in the race to sign Rayan Cherki for just £16.8m
Tottenham Hotspur are thought to be right in the thick of the race to land Rayan Cherki from Lyon after his latest transfer admission.
The Lyon man has been heavily linked with a move to N17 over the last couple of months, and over recent days, some outlets have claimed that Tottenham have upped the ante in their pursuit of Cherki.
Spurs and the winger’s other suitors received a major boost a couple of days ago when Cherki confirmed that he will leave Lyon this summer.
A fresh update has now shed light on who Tottenham Hotspur are expected to compete with for the France Under-21 international and the factors which will dictate whether he will end up joining the Lilywhites.
Tottenham’s move for Rayan Cherki depends on two factors
This update comes from TEAMtalk, who say that Cherki’s recent admission about wanting a new challenge has piqued the interest of several clubs, particularly given the winger’s €20m (£16.8m) release clause.
The report says that Tottenham are among the Lyon man suitors and are ‘firmly in the mix’ to land him, but they were always expected to hold fire until after the Europa League final.
The outlet states that Champions League qualification and Tottenham’s managerial appointment in the summer were both ‘decisive factors’ in whether Spurs move forward decisively to sign Rayan Cherki.
While we now know that Tottenham will indeed feature in Europe’s premier competition next season, there are still some question marks over Ange Postecoglou.
Borussia Dortmund are also interested in the 21-year-old, but they have not made any concrete move for him, while Bayern Munich, Manchester City, PSG, Newcastle, and Crystal Palace have all gathered information about the player.
Concerns over Cherki’s attitude may worry Spurs
However, TEAMtalk say that while many clubs around Europe are convinced about Cherki’s talent, there are concerns around his attitude and his character.
Many of his suitors are wary of how he will adapt to a new dressing room, which is putting them off from pressing forward with a move for the attacker.
In fact, the publication reveals that Atalanta held talks over a move for Cherki last summer, but the move ultimately stalled due to concerns over the player’s temperament.
