£59m striker has "held talks" with Man Utd through his agent, he's eyeing Premier League move - report
Manchester United suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in Wednesday’s Europa League final at San Mames.
The Red Devils have missed out on silverware as a result and won’t be playing any form of European football next season.
Despite the setback, the club are poised to spend big during the summer. Some of the funds could be recouped from player sales.
O Jogo (page 6) today claim that Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres could join United or Arsenal in the next transfer window.
Juventus are also admirers of the highly-rated striker, but they may not afford him unless they qualify for the Champions League.
Moreover, it is reported that Gyokeres has already made up his mind, and he is planning his next project in the Premier League.
Gyokeres, through his agent, has ‘held talks’ with United and Arsenal. It is ‘very likely’ that his future will be with one of them.
The striker has a £84 million release clause in his contract, but Sporting CP have agreed to sanction his departure for £59m.
United unlikely to land Gyokeres this summer
The Sweden international has been in phenomenal form for Sporting CP over the past two years.
He has netted a stunning 53 goals alongside 13 assists in all competitions this campaign.
The 26-year-old has an impressive shot-to-goal conversion rate of 28 percent.
Gyokeres has also won five duels per game and has excelled with his work rate.
He would be a perfect addition to the United strike force which has misfired.
United could consider him as a replacement for Rasmus Hojlund, who is attracting interest from Serie A giants Inter Milan ahead of the summer transfer window.
However, we simply don’t see a deal happening for one major reason.
Gyokeres previously informed manager Ruben Amorim that he would only consider joining United if he is guaranteed Champions League football next season.
That door has been closed with United’s failure in the Europa League final. A win would have assured a berth in the league phase of the Champions League.
With no European football, United are at a huge disadvantage. Unless Gyokeres changes his stance, he is unlikely to move to Old Trafford over the summer.
League rivals Arsenal have a clear run at signing him, though it is unclear whether the Swede is the number one striker target for the London outfit.
