Walker Buehler Responds To Ump’s Explanation For Ejection

Walker Buehler took accountability for his brief outing Tuesday night, but the Red Sox starter knows he wasn’t entirely to blame for what went down at Fenway Park.

Buehler was seven outs into his first outing in nearly a month when he was ejected by home-plate umpire Mike Estabrook. After Boston’s 2-0 win over the New York Mets, crew chief Laz Diaz explained in a pool report that the veteran right-hander was tossed because he left the mound to argue balls and strikes.

Did Buehler abandon the bump amid his verbal spat with Estabrook? No doubt about it. However, the two-time World Series champion didn’t leave his post until Estabrook removed his mask, walked toward the hill and started barking at Buehler.

The ninth-year pro pointed that out when he responded to Diaz’s explanation on social media.

“Who cut the distance?” Buehler posted to X early Wednesday morning.

Fortunately for Buehler, his frustration was fleeting. While he surely would have loved to go longer in his first start since leaving the injured list, he watched Boston’s bullpen put together another masterful performance in the club’s second straight victory over Francisco Lindor and company.

Buehler expressed a ton of support for the relievers rising to the occasion, and he undoubtedly will be doing the same for his teammates again Wednesday when the Red Sox go for their first sweep since early April.
