Bruins Will Have To Make This ‘Choice’ With No. 7 Overall Pick

Bruins team president Cam Neely already knows Boston “better hit” on their top-10 pick in next month’s NHL draft.

But what should the Bruins target with the No. 7 overall pick? Perhaps they draft a two-way center in the mold of Patrice Bergeron. They also could look to solidify their blue line with a hard-nosed defenseman. A winger with adept scoring skills would work, too.

But TSN analyst Craig Button said in a clip that can be seen on NESN’s “The Hockey Hub” podcast that the Bruins really should be all in on drafting a centerman.

“I’m a big believer that if you don’t draft a center, you’re not going to have a center when you need a center. And the Bruins need some top-end centers,” Button said. “I think there are top-end centers available to them at seven. They’ll have to make a choice. It’s not just going to come down to one player. They’ll have to make a choice I think between two, maybe three of them. But I think it sets them up for finding that player that can anchor the middle of the ice.”

The draft boasting a deep center class does bode well for the Bruins, giving them a chance to pick up an elite player at the position.

Caleb Desnoyers is already drawing comparisons to Bergeron, while Jake O’Brien, Roger McQueen and Brady Martin could be options for the Bruins if they are still available when they get on the clock.

The Bruins certainly have some time to think about what they are going to do with the NHL draft taking place June 27.
