Veteran Focused On Healthy Patriots Quarterback Room
Joshua Dobbs knew he would not start over Drake Maye when the New England Patriots embark on their 2025 season, and he is fine with that.
What’s important to the veteran signal-caller is helping to create a “healthy” quarterback room — something he learned from former Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett.
“One of my faves and a familiar face up here is Jacoby. He had two stints here,” Dobbs said, per MassLive’s Mark Daniels. “And for me, I got a chance to spend time with him in Cleveland. And at that point, he had played much more football than I had played. I really hadn’t played much football from a starting capacity, and to be able to learn from him, like see how you approach every single week, reps in the offseason, how he engaged with his teammates, it was a really good, healthy quarterback group.
“And that’s why I’ve enjoyed at the stops that I feel have been the most productive for me is a healthy quarterback room. Whoever the guy is out there on Sunday, it’s everyone’s job in that room to make sure they’re supported and ready to go, ready to play. And obviously, from my role, it’s ensuring that as we’re in the offense together, Drake feels comfortable and can go out there and play at a high level.”
Dobbs has been a member of nine different NFL teams in his career, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions, Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals, Minnesota Vikings, San Francisco 49ers and Browns.
He spent most of the 2022 season as Brissett’s backup in Cleveland after Deshaun Watson was suspended for 11 games. After Watson returned, Dobbs was waived and landed in Tennessee with Ryan Tannehill out for the season. He started two games for the Titans, completing 40 passes on 68 attempts for 411 yards and two touchdowns.
“I’ve been in different quarterback rooms throughout my career,” Dobbs said. “And I think just when you have guys that when everyone’s all working towards the same mission. We’re just trying to be the best quarterbacks we can be on a daily basis right from our leadership, from how we handle ourselves in the locker room, from our preparation, and ultimately, how we perform and compete on the field, no matter who’s in there. I think that’s what makes a healthy room… And that makes a hell of a team. I think coach Vrabel has done a great job of establishing that culture and identity.”
Dobbs signed a two-year contract with New England in March, worth $8 million over the two years, with $3.8 million guaranteed.
