Tottenham will have to pay £40m to sign 'special' Argentine talent

0 4

Tottenham Hotspur are one of several English clubs thought to be eyeing a move for Argentine midfield prodigy Franco Mastantuono, and Fabrizio Romano has just explained what the North London club would have to do to win the race for the youngster this summer.

Tottenham have a rich legacy with Argentine players, with the likes of Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa entertaining fans at White Hart Lane decades ago, while Erik Lamela and Cristian Romero have carried on that legacy more recently.

It turns out that the Lilywhites are now plotting a move for another prodigious talent from the South American nation, who is turning a lot of heads within the Primera Division.

It first emerged back in March that Spurs have set their sights on River Plate starlet Franco Mastantuono, who has already made 55 senior appearances at the tender age of 17.

Fabrizio Romano reveals Mastantuono’s release clause

The teenager made the headlines on Sunday, scoring a brilliant free kick in River Plate’s Superclasico clash against Boca Juniors as his side emerged 2-1 winners.

In the wake of his goal, Fabrizio Romano has now offered an update on the young attacking midfielder’s future, revealing that he has a £40m release clause in his contract.

The Italian transfer expert explained that River Plate will not consider letting the Argentine Under-20 international leave unless the clause is activated.

Romano said on his YouTube channel: “I wanted to say something on one of the best talents in the world in this moment, Franco Mastantuono’s talent and release clause.

“This Franco Mastantuono, what a goal he scored against Boca Juniors on a free kick, but this boy is really special, his left foot feels something really, really special.

“There is a clause there, something around £40-£41million plus taxes, so the clause is there and this probably the only way to convince River Plate to sell Franco Mastantuono.”

Tottenham face Franco Mastantuono competition from Premier League duo

It was reported by some outlets last month that Man United are ready to challenge Tottenham in the race for Mastantuono.

Interestingly, Romano has now revealed that Chelsea are also eyeing the 17-year-old, but he made no mention of Tottenham Hotspur’s interest. However, he made it clear that the race for Mastantuono remains wide open ahead of the summer transfer window.

Romano added: “English clubs interested in Mastantuono – Chelsea, (Man) United, all these clubs are well informed on the situation of Franco.

“So it will be one to watch for sure, but it is an open race because you need to pay the clause, you need to convince the player, and you need also to reach an agreement with the agents. So it is a deal that needs a big structure before saying it’s done.”
