Four External Red Sox First Base Options After Triston Casas Injury

The Boston Red Sox (likely) will soon be looking for an everyday first baseman.

Triston Casas went down with a “significant knee injury” early in Friday’s victory over the Minnesota Twins, opening up the possibility for a second consecutive season in which the club finds itself scrambling for his replacement.

How good are the options, though?

Boston has plenty of internal replacements, which we’ve already laid out, but if this happens to be a long-term injury, perhaps it looks outside the organization for a fix? Dom Smith and Garrett Cooper had their run last season, and these guys seem like potential fits this go around:

Joey Meneses

Meneses spent time within the organization a few years back, but never got a chance to prove himself before electing free agency and signing with the Washington Nationals. He absolutely raked throughout portions of 2022 and 2023, but the club elected to look elsewhere this past offseason, leaving him without a major league home in 2025.

Meneses is currently playing for the Syracuse Mets and can leave to join anyone so long as it’s on a big league contract. Could a return to one of his previous professional homes be in the cards?

Jon Singleton

Singleton is also playing for the Syracuse Mets.

The Red Sox could want a left-handed option to platoon with Romy Gonzalez, and this is one with some pop in the bat. Singleton had 13 home runs last season playing with the Houston Astros, though he isn’t going to start many rallies.

Anthony Rizzo

Rizzo isn’t anywhere close to being what he was back in the day, but he did play every day for a team that just made it to the World Series. Boston probably wants someone who has swung a bat within the calendar year, though.

Ty France

Doug Mientkiewicz once got traded in the middle of a series between the Red Sox and Twins, literally walking from one clubhouse to another to join his new team.

Could the same thing happen to France?

No, probably not. Minnesota is too early into its season to trade away a key offensive contributor, but he is on a one-year deal, so perhaps there could be some persuading done if Boston wants to really go for it and get the best possible replacement.
