Only one Tottenham manager has more defeats in a season than Ange Postecoglou

0 2

According to stats, Ange Postecoglou is now two defeats away from breaking the unwanted Tottenham record for most Premier League losses.

Ange Postecoglou’s future as Tottenham boss is very much up in the air, and it’s clear to see why – the Australian has now dropped a staggering 11 places from his first-season Premier League finish.

Tottenham are currently languishing in 16th place in the league standings, just a single point above struggling West Ham United and a hefty 22 points off fourth-placed Newcastle United.

While progression to the semi-finals of the Europa League has been a small silver lining for the 59-year-old manager, reports suggest that it won’t be enough to keep him in the job beyond this season.

Ange Postecoglou is nearing the Tottenham record for most Premier League defeats ever

Tottenham’s poor league form is expected to weigh heavily in the club’s decision-making, and with Ange Postecoglou now on the brink of setting the wrong kind of record, the writing may already be on the wall.

According to statistics from Squawka, Postecoglou is now among just three Tottenham managers to suffer the most defeats in a single Premier League season.

The recent 2-1 loss to Nottingham Forest in matchweek 33 marked Tottenham’s 18th league defeat of the campaign – equalling a mark reached only once by Gerry Francis in the 1996/97 season and surpassed just once by Ossie Ardiles during the 1993/94 campaign.

However, it must be remembered that Ardiles managed Tottenham back when the English top flight had 42 games per season instead of 38. Postecoglou has managed 18 defeats in just 33 league games so far this season, and there is still plenty of time to equal and surpass Ardiles’ record.

This certainly doesn’t make for good reading for Postecoglou, who is staring down the barrel of a record no manager wants, with five league games still to go.

Next up for Tottenham is a daunting trip to Anfield to face Liverpool, and that could very well be another loss for the Lilywhites, with Arne Slot’s side keen to put on a show in front of the home fans.

As for Postecoglou, the fight now is simply to avoid ending up on the wrong side of the club’s history books – because right now, he’s on course to go down as one of Spurs’ worst Premier League managers.
