Ange Postecoglou accused of destroying Tottenham youngster’s dreams
Carlton Cole is not at all happy with what Ange Postecoglou is doing with one Tottenham youngster, despite him getting plenty of minutes in the starting XI this season.
While Archie Gray arrived at Tottenham with a reputation as one of the brightest young talents in the EFL, most people would have expected the youngster to have a difficult first season at the highest level, especially given that he only had a year of senior football under his belt before his big move.
Instead, the teenager has looked completely unfazed by the challenges that have been thrown in front of him this season, thriving out of position as a centre-back during the club’s injury crisis.
It is due to the maturity that he has shown that Archie Gray has already been touted by pundits as a future Tottenham legend.
Carlton Cole questions Ange Postecoglou’s use of Archie Gray
Earlier this month, Teddy Sheringham raised concerns about Gray’s versatility working against him, suggesting that the youngster’s ability to play several roles might prevent him from becoming the best in any one position.
Carlton Cole has now gone a step further and accused Ange Postecoglou of destroying Gray’s dream by playing him as a Tottenham centre-back.
The former West Ham man revealed that the Spurs starlet was actually playing upfront when he coached him for England Under-17s, admitting that he is puzzled to now see him play in defence.
Cole said on The Dressing Room Podcast: “Archie Gray. Yeah. Why is he playing centre-half? When I coached him for England under-17s, right? He was upfront.
“I’m seeing him in the Premier League, he’s playing centre-half. I’m thinking, what’s going on here? Why are you ripping the boy’s dreams?”
What Archie Gray has said about his position
While pundits and media figures might disagree with Postecoglou’s use of Gray, the player himself has welcomed the challenge of playing in several positions.
After winning the Young Player of the Year award at the London Football Awards in February, Gray said that he does not care which position he plays.
The former Leeds man remarked that the opportunity to play across different roles helps him become a more well-rounded player.
