Watch: Another Tottenham fan favourite sent off 19 minutes into latest debut
Tottenham fan favourite Victor Wanyama made his debut for Scottish second-tier side Dunfermline Athletic on Sunday, but it was a day that the midfielder will want to erase from his memory as it ended in a disaster.
Wanyama is remembered fondly by the Tottenham supporters, with the Kenyan forming a formidable partnership with Mousa Dembele in the middle of the park in his heyday.
His injury woes prevented him from perhaps achieving what he would have wanted to at the North London club, and since departing N17 in 2020, the midfielder has had five successful years with CF Montreal in the MLS.
In a surprise move, the former Tottenham Hotspur man decided to sign for Scottish second-tier side Dunfermline Athletic until the end of the season but his time at the club has not got off to the most auspicious of starts.
Former Tottenham star Victor Wanyama’s debut ends in disaster
The former Spurs star was introduced as a substitute after 64 minutes in the clash against Ayr but his debut for the club lasted just 19 minutes.
Wanyama had a comical moment in the dying stages of the game as he slipped in his own final third and handled the ball in a desperate attempt to avoid it from being pinched by the opposition.
The referee had no choice but to hand the 33-year-old a straight red card for denying the opposition a goalscoring opportunity.
Neil Lennon not happy with Wanyama red card
Dunfermline Athletic are managed by former Celtic boss, Neil Lennon, who was far from pleased at the decision to send the newcomer off.
Lennon insisted that Wanyama had just instinctively reached out to the ball after slipping, suggesting that the punishment was quite harsh.
The Dunfermline Athletic boss said (via Dunfermline Press) about the midfielder: “He slipped and his initial reaction is to reach out for it, but I thought, with Jeremiah there, I didn’t think the guy would have been clean through.”
Wanyama is not the only former Tottenham fan favourite to see red on his debut recently. Dele Alli was sent off for a late challenge in his debut for Como last month.
