Destiny Udogie lauds Djed Spence despite intense battle for left-back spot
Fellow Tottenham Hotspur full-back Destiny Udogie has now hailed Djed Spence’s impact at the club, labelling him an “incredible player.”
Djed Spence’s early days at Spurs were frustrating, as the full-back managed just five minutes of Premier League action after arriving under Antonio Conte.
However, this season, he has seized his opportunity, clocking up 1,064 Premier League minutes and 1,680 minutes in all competitions.
Of course, it took a defensive injury crisis for Spence to get his first league start, which came against Southampton on 15 December. But once the door opened, he made sure to walk straight through it.
Season | Matches Played | Minutes Played |
---|---|---|
2024/25 | 24 | 1,680′ |
2022/23 | 8 | 253′ |
Destiny Udogie on Djed Spence’s impact
Since making that breakthrough, Djed Spence has not looked back. The 24-year-old has since racked up 19 appearances in all competitions, starting 17.
His performances have drawn praise from pundits, and Spence was even nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month award in February.
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola also singled Djed Spence out after Spurs’ narrow 1-0 defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a testament to how well he has performed.
Now, Destiny Udogie has spoken highly of his teammate, highlighting their close relationship and mutual desire to push each other to new heights.
He told the official Tottenham website, “I think Djed is an incredible player, we are really close friends, we speak a lot, and we try to help each other in games.
“Everyone in the group is here to help, and I hope he can help us as much as possible. Since he’s come in, he’s having a top season. He’s helping the team a lot.
“We speak every day and try to help by teaching each other new stuff. So he helps me, I help him, and it’s a great relationship.”
Of course, the duo have barely shared the pitch this season. In fact, since their outing together at St Mary’s, they have only played alongside each other once—in Tottenham’s 4-1 win over Ipswich Town.
Spurs teammates back Spence to succeed
It is not just Udogie who has been impressed. Dejan Kulusevski has also spoken glowingly about Spence in a not-too-long interview, backing him to have a “very good career.”
“Djed Spence has been unbelievable since he started playing. I think he is the type of player where you just have to let him loose on the pitch,” Kulusevski said in a recent interview.
“When he finally got his chance, he showed everyone what he can do—he is unbelievable physically, very strong and fast, and very good with the ball. He has been huge for us.
“This is probably only the beginning for him. He can have a very good career if he keeps going and works hard.”
