Tottenham fans react to claims Atletico Madrid want to poach one of their players
Atletico Madrid have reportedly enquired about Rodrigo Bentancur, sparking plenty of debate among Tottenham Hotspur fans. While some see it as an opportunity to cash in, others believe the midfielder still has something to offer despite his underwhelming performances this season.
Sometime last month, reports emerged that Tottenham were set to open contract negotiations with Bentancur.
Given that Bentancur’s approaching the final year of his current deal, this wasn’t unexpected. If Spurs fail to tie him down before the last six months of his contract, he could leave on a free.
However, Bentancur’s form has left many fans questioning whether he actually deserves a new deal. His performances have been inconsistent, and with Spurs looking to strengthen in midfield, some believe the club would be better off moving on.
Atletico Madrid enquire about Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur
Now, fresh reports suggest Atletico Madrid have made an enquiry about Bentancur, leading to even more discussion among the Spurs fanbase. Many supporters believe this is an opportunity for the club to cash in on the midfielder.
One fan didn’t hold back: “Let him [Bentancur] & Biss go. Bring in Cardoso, let him rotate with Gray as a 6. Madders & Kulu can rotate in the attacking role – Bergvall & Sarr can rotate as B2B. Get rid of Johnson, bring in Dibling to rotate with Odobert. Bring in Gittens, let Son go and rotate with Tel.”
Another joked: “Uber to the airport is on me.”
One supporter felt the move would suit all parties: “He’d honestly do really well at Atleti, the way they play would suit him way more than he does for us. Honestly, it’s a good move for all, depending on the fee, of course.”
Not everyone is eager to see him go, though. One fan argued: “He is quality, should keep him and let him prove that again. Wasn’t that long ago he was playing very well, just needs an injury-free run.”
Bentancur’s struggles raise questions about his future
We’ve rated Bentancur as one of Tottenham’s worst-performing midfielders this season. He’s looked sluggish, often struggling defensively, and has delivered more bang-average performances than standout ones.
Whether he renews or not, Spurs need more firepower in midfield. If Bentancur stays, he’ll have to step up significantly—otherwise, it might be best for all involved if he moves on.
