Ange Postecoglou told he made huge mistake against Fulham that Man United avoided

0 5

Troy Deeney has questioned a big decision that Ange Postecoglou made against Fulham on Sunday, questioning why Tottenham did not follow the likes of Manchester United and Newcastle United.

The mood surrounding Tottenham Hotspur had improved following their passage to the Europa League quarterfinal last Thursday, but unfortunately, the Lilywhites were not able to build on that momentum, falling to a 2-0 loss at Craven Cottage on Sunday.

It is a result that leaves Lilywhites 10 points adrift of the top-half of the table and some pundits feel Postecoglou’s job is now hanging by a thread.

Troy Deeney believes that the responsibility for the defeat against Fulham ultimately falls on Postecoglou, questioning the Australian’s selection decision.

Troy Deeney questions why Tottenham rotated so heavily

Postecoglou decided to rotate his starting eleven, with the likes of Brennan Johnson, Mathy Tel and Yves Bissouma coming into the side.

It is a decision that backfired, with the Tottenham boss forced to bring on the likes of Lucas Bergvall and Heung-min at half-time after an extremely poor first-half display.

Deeney insisted that Postecoglou should have done what Ruben Amorim and Eddie Howe did by naming a full-strength team on Sunday.

The former Watford man told BBC’s Match of the Day 2: “When you look at two other teams, you can take Newcastle. On Monday, they played West Ham and they go with their strongest team even though they had a cup final on Sunday.

“Then you look at Manchester United and they could have easily rested. They took three players out, one enforced with a suspension, just changed two and kept the nucleus of that team together, and now they’re developing and they’re they’re looking to attack the end of the season.

“When you look at Spurs, they’re in a situation now where they’re hoping. I agree with Wayne [Rooney], you’ve got to go with your strongest team, Odobert just scored two. Let him play, if he gives you sixty or seventy [minutes] and blows up. No problem, come off you got 18 days.”

Ange Postecoglou had no choice but to rotate his squad

Deeney’s criticism of Postecoglou seems to completely ignore the kind of injury crisis that Tottenham have had over recent months, which has forced the Australian to put a lot of minutes into the legs of around 13 or 14 players.

Now that he has some players back from injury, Postecoglou will feel that he has a duty to share around the minutes a little to minimise the chances of injuries for some of his key men during the business end of the campaign.

The 59-year-old would want to achieve a respectable Premier League finish but there is no doubt that his focus over the next two months will primarily be on winning the Europa League.
