Tottenham fans react to Mathys Tel’s heated exchange with Spurs supporters

0 12

Tottenham’s inconsistency struck again as they fell to Fulham in a disappointing London derby defeat, but, while the team failed to deliver, Mathys Tel’s post-match gesture left Spurs fans with plenty to discuss.

You never know what to expect from Tottenham Hotspur this season. One moment, they’re putting in world-class performances; the next, they’re completely abysmal. Sunday’s London derby against Fulham was another reminder of their inconsistency.

Just days after a hard-fought 3-2 aggregate win over AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League, Spurs slumped to their 15th defeat of the Premier League season.

Their latest 2-0 loss at the hands of Fulham, has seen the north London club slip from 13th to 14th in the Premier League table, with Man United moving past them following their 3-0 win against Leicester City.

Mathys Tel’s full-time apology divides Tottenham fans

For many supporters, this simply isn’t good enough. A club of Spurs’ stature should be competing at the top end of the table, not scraping for consistency.

Yet, in the aftermath of another underwhelming display, it was Mathys Tel—on loan from Bayern Munich—who took it upon himself to acknowledge the travelling fans.

A commendable gesture, but one that sparked debate among the fanbase. On social media, reactions were mixed. Some praised Tel’s commitment while calling out the senior players.

One supporter wrote: “More of a captain than Sonny, Romero, and Maddison are.” Another added: “Loan player too. The other players don’t care, that’s why they never show up.”

Others questioned the lack of leadership from Spurs’ experienced players. One fan commented: “Fair play, but why is a 19-year-old loan player doing that? Where’s the ‘leadership group’?”

Meanwhile, some supporters were unimpressed, demanding better performances instead. “Trying to show he cares, but he should just win games on the pitch,” one supporter said. Another fan didn’t hold back: “I’d rather he stopped being s***, then he wouldn’t need to apologise to the fans.”

Spurs must start winning games

At this point, it’s simple—Tottenham need to start winning football matches. The Premier League campaign is more or less a write-off, but a strong finish is still vital for momentum and belief.

The Europa League remains the only chance at silverware, yet recent performances don’t exactly inspire confidence.

Postecoglou now has a full squad at his disposal, however, results and performances remain inconsistent. While squad rotation plays a role, a team of Spurs’ calibre should be capable of maintaining a high level regardless of changes.

That’s been the biggest issue this season—the inability to sustain quality performances week in, week out.

Fans need to feel like their team can get the job done, no matter the circumstances. Right now, that confidence isn’t there.
