Four Red Sox Prospect Storylines Entering 2025 Spring Breakout Game

The Boston Red Sox get to showcase their farm system Thursday in the second installment of MLB’s Spring Breakout game.

This year, the Red Sox take on the Tampa Bay Rays in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Boston’s top-level farm system is full of elite talent, with the leading names just weeks and months away from their respective MLB debuts. Behind them are emerging pitchers and another wave of position-player talent that can introduce themselves to a greater audience.

You can check in on some big names with NESN.com’s 2025 Red Sox Prospect Series here.

Now, here are four storylines to watch in Thursday’s Spring Breakout game between the Red Sox and the Rays:

1. Yes, the “Big Three” will be there
Kristian Campbell, Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony all should impact the Red Sox at some point this season.

For now, all three are rostered and ready to play in the Breakout game.

Campbell’s case for Boston’s Opening Day roster makes the most sense of the three, while Mayer’s health and improvement are storylines of their own. Anthony, the top-ranked hitting prospect in baseball, also can put on a show at the plate.

Here’s how the three Red Sox prospects performed so far this spring training:

Campbell: 12 G, 5-28, 2B, 5 BB
Mayer: 10 G, 8-21, 3B, HR, 3 BB
Anthony: 6 G, 4-13, 2B, 4 BB

2. Who’s ready to pitch?
Names such as Richard Fitts, Quinn Priester and Hunter Dobbins all can fill in for a spot start or an extended stay in the back of the Red Sox’s rotation in 2025.

This game marks a great spot to check in on other emerging arms in the system.

Keep an eye on arms such as Connelly Early and David Sandlin on Thursday and throughout the season.

3. Keep your eyes on this 2022 first-rounder
Mikey Romero started to finally find his professional groove late last season when he hit 10 home runs with an .817 OPS with High-A Greenville. Red Sox manager Alex Cora recently voiced his support of Romero, who’s gone 4-for-7 so far this spring.

4. Fill in “The Password”
Jhostynxon Garcia — nicknamed “The Password” — could be a central piece of the next position-player wave in the Red Sox system.
