Sir Jim Ratcliffe reveals United’s position on possible sale of Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo
Forward Alejandro Garnacho and midfielder Kobbie Mainoo have been linked with an exit from Manchester United due to the club’s financial constraints.
The proceeds from the sale of the duo will be pure profits for United, preventing the club from breaching the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Garnacho was heavily linked with Napoli in the January transfer window as a replacement for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, but they could not afford his hefty price tag.
Despite reported interest from Chelsea, they did not formally approach Man United to sign the Argentina international.
Chelsea and Bayern Munich were also credited with an interest in Mainoo. His future is up in the air, as he is set to reject the Red Devils’ contract offer.
However, United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has revealed that the club would only sell Garnacho or Mainoo for sporting reasons.
He told BBC Sport: “No, no. We won’t be selling players because of our financial state. The club had got bloated so we reduced that and will finish it with a lean and efficient organisation.
“That’s how we will address the costs. The player decisions will all be focused on how we are going to improve performance. That’s all.”
United must keep promising duo
The two youngsters have not been in blistering form under manager Ruben Amorim but have shown they can succeed.
Mainoo can play in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 set-up. He scored one and assisted another as the number 10 in the 2-0 win over FSCB in the Europa League.
Garnacho has also shown flashes of brilliance under Amorim. He has provided the width while the wing-back inverts whenever he has played as one of the number 10s.
The Argentine needs to improve his decision-making in the final third, but his talent makes him unsellable.
