Tottenham will find it difficult to sign Eberechi Eze, Fabrizio Romano explains why
Fabrizio Romano has revealed why it will be difficult for Tottenham Hotspur to complete a deal for Eberechi Eze, a player who is coveted by Ange Postecoglou.
It has been reported over recent weeks that Ange Postecoglou sees Eberechi Eze as a top Tottenham target in the summer and the Lilywhites are frontrunners to win the race for the 26-year-old’s signature.
GiveMeSport explained a few days ago that despite their admiration for the midfielder, Spurs are not prepared to trigger Eze’s £68m release clause.
Spurs are ‘eager to discover’ if the Eagles will entertain any offers for the England international which falls short of the clause.
Fabrizio Romano says Eberechi Eze clause makes things tricky
Fabrizio Romano has now explained that Eze’s release clause is not straightforward, making the deal a lot more complicated for Tottenham.
He revealed that the full £68m would have to be paid upfront for the clause to be activated, while other clubs are also eyeing the Palace star ahead of the summer.
Romano told GiveMeSport about Eze: “He’s on Spurs’ list since 2023, he’s always been highly rated at the club. But the release clause is very expensive and the payment for the clause is not allowed in 3/4 years as usually happens, so that’s what makes the deal difficult – and there are more clubs also keen.”
Do Tottenham need to spend big on an attacking midfielder?
With James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Bergvall already at the club, one wonders if it would be an optimal use of resources to spend £68m on Eze.
Perhaps Postecoglou would prefer to use those funds to add more world-class ability to his forward line or to add a top-quality number-six to his ranks.
