Robbie Fowler would love to see Tottenham star in a Liverpool shirt

0 3

Robbie Fowler believes that one Tottenham Hotspur man is the ideal choice to replace one Liverpool stalwart if he leaves Anfield at the end of the season.

Micky van de Ven’s short career so far has been blighted by hamstring injuries, which is a real cause for concern among Spurs fans. Tottenham have been advised to consult experts about changing Van de Ven’s running style in order to minimise the chances of hamstring injuries.

However, despite his prevailing injury issues, the Spurs man is still thought of as one of the best young defenders in the world at the moment. The raw pace he possesses is very uncommon for a centre-back of such physical stature.

Over recent weeks, we have heard reports that Real Madrid have identified Micky Van de Ven as a possible option to reinforce their backline. Spurs fans will not be happy to hear what a former England international has now said about the left-footed defender.

Robbie Fowler makes Liverpool claim about Micky Van de Ven

Liverpool may need to look for a replacement for Virgil van Dijk in the summer, with the Reds Captain’s current deal running out in the summer.

Club legend Robbie Fowler has now suggested that if the Merseyside club fail to convince Van Dijk to stay, they should replace him with his countryman, Van de Ven.

The 49-year-old admitted that he could see the Tottenham man doing some impressive things in a Liverpool shirt.

Speaking to BoyleSports, Fowler said: “When it comes to potentially replacing Virgil van Dijk, I’m a big fan of both Dean Huijsen at Bournemouth and Micky van de Ven at Tottenham. Having said that, we are talking about players who are not as good as Van Dijk, he is the absolute standout in the Premier League and all efforts should be made to keep him at the club.

“As a football fan, you want your club to keep improving and keep signing good, valuable players, but first of all, it’s about keeping your best players at the club. He is a Rolls Royce of a player and I do think that the game looks too easy for him at times, he is a tremendous player and a tremendous leader. We’re in the realms of just giving him what he wants to ensure he stays.

“There are good players out there but no one as good as him, if he does go then it should be someone that knows the Premier League. Someone who knows the speed and the intensity. But replacing Van Dijk with anyone is a gamble.

“I think Micky van de Ven would look right in a Liverpool shirt. I’m the sort of fan that thinks if you’re not out there signing good players then you’re slipping behind the competition and are slipping backwards. If you’re not doing that and improving the squad you can plateau.

“When it comes to Micky van de Ven, he’s a very very good player despite having his injury problems. I think he is strong, fast and I think he would look right in a Liverpool shirt. I know Tottenham fans won’t want to hear that but it’s a compliment to him as a player that I think the league leaders should have a look at him.”

Would Tottenham consider offers for Van de Ven?

While Van de Ven is undeniably a unique player, his injury problems would be a matter of concern for Tottenham.

If the club fear that his hamstring problems will reoccur throughout his career and think it might affect his future value, perhaps there would be some thought given to offers in the £80m range for Van de Ven, which was unthinkable six months ago.

However, one doubts that such a decision will be made this summer as Postecoglou and Tottenham know the potential upside of Van de Ven if he can put his injury issues behind him.
