Wrexham star Andy Cannon given oxygen on pitch and carried off on stretcher in terrifying injury scare
WREXHAM star Andy Cannon was given oxygen and stretchered off during his side’s League One clash with Mansfield.
The midfielder, 28, appeared to awkwardly twist his ankle after being tackled by Stag star Louis Reed inside 36 minutes.
Cannon looked in real discomfort after Reed caught his foot and didn’t arise from the turf as Mansfield stars checked on him.
Wrexham medics immediately rushed onto the pitch to come to his aid and soon formed a protective huddle around him.
The Englishman subsequently received lengthy medical treatment and was given oxygen.
Cannon, who helped doctors hold the oxygen mask to his face, was eventually stretchered off at Field Mill.
Ex-Mansfield manager Paul Cox said: “It looks like he got his studs caught in the ground and all his weight went the other way.
“It looked a bad one straight away. You could just tell he was signalling to the bench straight away.”
A fan said: “It looked like an accident, Reed stood on his ankle as he turned.”
The score was 1-1 at the time, after Mansfield left-back Calum Macdonald scored at both ends following his early own-goal.

The first-half was extended by 10 minutes of stoppage time after the lengthy delay.
Cannon – who has scored twice this season – was given a round of applause from both sets of fans as he was stretchered off the pitch.
Matty James – who was dropped to the bench after starting in the midweek defeat to Leyton Orient – came on in his place.
A long-term injury to Cannon could spell disaster, as the midfielder has started 16 of the club’s 27 League One games this term, missing some games through suspension and injury.
Phil Parkinson’s side are pushing for automatic promotion but are in their worst run of the campaign, with four league defeats in eight.
This sequence comes immediately after picking up six wins in an unbeaten eight-match league run.
Yet Wrexham have been happier on their travels of late.
Victory today would give the Red Dragons three successive away EFL wins for the first time since August 2003.
