Stan Collymore predicts bleak future for Tottenham under Daniel Levy without Ange Postecoglou

0 4

Stan Collymore has explained why he is not too optimistic that Ange Postecoglou will be given sufficient time to build a promising project at Tottenham Hotspur by trigger-happy Daniel Levy.

In the over two decades that Levy has been in charge, he has not hesitated to sack managers as soon as things start going wrong on the pitch.

However, with Postecoglou, the Tottenham supremo has resisted the urge to pull the plug even though the club have been mired in the bottom half of the Premier League table for a while.

That suggests that the Spurs hierarchy are sympathetic to the injury situation that the Australian coach has been dealing with over the last few months.

Daniel Levy will replace Ange Postecoglou with shiny new Tottenham manager

Tottenham’s injury situation is now easing, with several first-team players returning to action recently and more expected to follow over the coming weeks.

As a result, one would think that Postecoglou now has to show results, with the 59-year-old no longer having injuries as an excuse to fall back on.

Collymore doubts if the Tottenham head coach will be backed in the way Mikel Arteta was at Arsenal, suggesting that Levy will be tempted to sack him and bring in the next ‘shiny new toy’.

The pundit told CaughOffside: “For Tottenham, is Ange Postecoglou a league title-winning manager or a regular top-four manager? Will he get the same amount of years as Mikel Arteta has had at Arsenal? I doubt it because Daniel Levy always looks to pull the rug and then get the new shiny manager to walk through the door.

“At Spurs, nothing’s going to change. Daniel Levy loves the shiny new stadium, having NFL games and concerts there etc. He’ll buy the odd marquee signing but otherwise, keep your mouth shut and don’t ask too many questions.”

Postecoglou’s future will depend on Spurs’ Europa League success

Postecoglou has to take Spurs close to winning the Europa League (if he does not actually win it) this season in order to convince the club’s hierarchy that he is the man for the long term.

The Tottenham head coach will also have to guide the club to a respectable Premier League finish by ensuring they are in and around the top six by the end of the campaign.

If he fails to do those things, it is difficult to see how the club will back him with more signings in the summer window.
