Lineker and Shearer offer ‘exquisite’ verdict on Mathys Tel’s Spurs debut
Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer were both impressed by some of the moments that Mathys Tel produced at Villa Park on Sunday, with both pundits raving about the Spurs newcomer’s finish.
Mathys Tel gets off the mark for Spurs
Tottenham had a day to forget at Villa Park as they were dumped out of the FA Cup, but one positive they can take from the clash is the fact that Tel is now officially off the mark in front of goal for the Lilywhites.
The 19-year-old’s goal came as a consolation in stoppage time as he produced an impressive finish with the outside of his boot after getting on the end of Dejan Kulusevski‘s in-swinging cross.
Tottenham fans will be hoping it is the first of many from the Frenchman in a white shirt as they look to salvage what has been a disastrous campaign so far for the club.
Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer were impressed by Tel
Lineker and Shearer certainly know a thing or two about scoring goals, with the duo being among the most natural finishers England has ever produced.
Tel can thus take a lot of heart from the fact that both pundits were left extremely impressed with the way the forward allowed the ball to drop over his shoulder before turning it into the far corner with the outside of his foot.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker said: “The other new man, I just want to mention, we’ve flipped back to Spurs briefly. I thought Tell showed a couple of nice bits. And that was an exquisite finish.”
Shearer replied: “Yeah, but that’s what I mean about, you don’t have to get to the byline all the time. You can put crosses in, you know, and that was a great cross that Kulusevski put in. And he did really well, Tell, to get on the end of it.
“And it was a really clever finish. So hopefully that’ll give him a bit of confidence and belief that he sort of belongs there and he can help Spurs get through this period.”
Tottenham’s attacking stocks set to be boosted
According to reports, the likes of Wilson Odobert, Timo Werner, Brennan Johnson, and Dominic Solanke are now closer to returning to action after recovering from their injuries.
With Tel also making a decent start to life at Spurs, Postecoglou suddenly has a whole host of options to choose from upfront after going through months where he was down to the bare bones in attack.
Heung-min Son might even come under pressure for his place in the side if he does not pick up his form over the next few weeks.
