Ange Postecoglou’s time at Tottenham

We are heading well into Postecoglou’s second season at Tottenham Hotspur, and so far it has been plagued with injuries and inconsistencies.

The downturn in results in the Premier League has seen Spurs drop to 14th place, 16 points away from fourth and ten points above the relegation place.

This poor run of form does not just end in the Premier League, in fact, in the space of 72 hours, the Lilywhites have crashed out of both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.

With results showing no sign of improving, criticism has only been fired at the Tottenham boss who promised to deliver silverware in his second season at the club.

Despite the poor run of form and results faltering, the Tottenham hierarchy has decided to stick with their man at least for the foreseeable future. This is unusual given their track record.

Why Tottenham will not sack manager Ange Postecoglou, yet

So far, since Ange Postecoglou’s appointment, he has overseen 80 games, won 39, lost 30, drawn 11 and has averaged 1.60 points per game. These are not groundbreaking numbers, yet he remains in charge of one of the biggest clubs in England. Here’s why?

Spurs injury crisis

The injury crisis that Tottenham Hotspur have experienced in the last two months is one of the manager’s saving grace.

Reports earlier in January revealed that the club’s owners are said to have an understanding of what the manager is going through on the injury front and instead of dismissing him, they have instead decided to back him in the winter window.

In a bid to help ease the injury crisis, Daniel Levy and Co. kept to their word and brought in three new signings. A centre-back, a goalkeeper and a versatile forward.

Since the club has backed Postecoglou in the winter window, it shows that they trust in the manager and it would be strange for them to sack him when the injured players are already close to full fitness.

The expectation is that they want to give the manager a chance to show what he is capable of with a fully fit squad.

No great mid-season managerial replacements

Another reason why Ange Postecoglou is still the man in the dugout for Spurs is the lack of suitable managerial replacements.

Ideally, if the club were to fire Ange today, they would want to get a manager with a high pedigree and experience managing in England. One of those would be Marco Silva or Andoni Iraola.

Both managers have been excellent in the Premier League this season in their respective clubs. Iraola for one, is performing exceptionally well.

His Bournemouth side has a chance of playing in Europe next season, and he is achieving all of this with a squad that is also contending with injuries.

However, securing his services will not be easy as he will most likely want to make a move away from his current role in the summer.

While Spurs can go for managers who are currently without a club, the ownership will not want just anyone, they will want someone whose style of play aligns with their vision.

The search for a new manager could go on for a while and this could leave Spurs with Ryan Mason and Matty Wells in charge for some time. Will this duo turn Spurs’ season around? Very unlikely.

The season is practically almost over for the Lilywhites. No FA Cup, no Carabao Cup and no Premier League.

Perhaps the ownership is looking at the situation and thinking they will be in a better position to make the best decision in the summer instead of throwing in a new manager into this current situation.

With the injured players set to return when the Europa League comes around, Ange Postecoglou now has the perfect opportunity to salvage this campaign with a strong end-of-the-season finish.

However, nothing is certain just yet and Postecoglou could still be sacked at any moment. Regardless of the club’s decision, the 24/25 campaign will now be treated as a preseason for the Lilywhites whose season is almost now practically done.
