Carabao Cup final would accelerate Tottenham growth – says Ange Postecoglou
Tottenham Hotspur head into the second leg of the Carabao Cup semifinal away at Liverpool carrying a slender lead, and Ange Postecoglou believes a cup final could accelerate growth in N17.
Season-defining game coming up for Tottenham
Tottenham’s upcoming trip to Anfield is not just their biggest game of the season so far, but arguably also the most important one of Postecoglou‘s tenure.
Spurs carry a 1-0 lead into the game from the first leg and should they manage to book a place in their first Wembley final in four years, it will change the atmosphere around the club and give the entire campaign a completely different feel.
However, should Tottenham be knocked out by Liverpool, the speculation over Postecoglou’s future at the club would likely restart, with the club being forced to face the reality of what has been a disastrous season in the Premier League.
Ange Postecoglou says Carabao Cup could accelerate Tottenham
Many managers in Postecoglou‘s position might be tempted to put men behind the ball and try to hold onto what they have, but the Australian is certainly not one to think in that way.
The Tottenham head coach will want his side to play their natural attacking game on Merseyside and believes qualifying for the final would accelerate growth within the Spurs squad.
Postecoglou told Football.London: “There’s no hiding it, it would be massive.
“We’ve had to beat both Manchester clubs to get to this point, we’ve had to beat Liverpool to be in this position now. To get to a final, it’s going to be hard-earned.
“Going to Anfield, the way they’re going this year, they’ve been an unbelievable team, they’re so consistent, they’re the most settled, injury-free team in the whole league. Apart from us, they’re the only ones in all the competitions, still having a crack at all the competitions. All those ingredients, if we manage to overcome that and get to a final, it would be massive.
“Massive for where we’re at, massive for our future. I’m sure it will accelerate the growth of our players and the belief in what we’re trying to do. In that context, it’s a massive night for us, but I think we’ve earned the right to be in this position, even though it’s been a real, difficult season for us. We’ve earned the right to make a big impact.”
Spurs will likely need to score twice to progress
Shutting Liverpool out at Anfield is a nearly impossible task, particularly for this Tottenham defence, who have given away goals for fun this season.
Realistically speaking, the away side might have to score twice to seal their passage to the Carabao Cup final, and attack might indeed be their best form of defence tomorrow evening.
However, having said that, it is vital that Postecoglou’s men do not concede in the first 20 minutes of the game as that will electrify the atmosphere at Anfield, and make Spurs‘ task much harder.
