NBA Rumors: Jimmy Butler Saga Comes To An End With Blockbuster Trade
In the end, Jimmy Butler got what he wanted.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the saga surrounding Butler and the Heat came to a close Wednesday with Miami dealing the disgruntled star to the Golden State Warriors for Andrew Wiggins, Dennis Schroder, Kyle Anderson and a protected first-round pick. Charania noted that Lindy Waters III of the Warriors and Josh Richardson of the Heat were traded to the Detroit Pistons in the deal as well.
Butler butted heads with Miami’s front office throughout the season, and it led to him being suspended three times during the month of January. Butler played in just five of 18 games since the calendar flipped to the new year as he received a two-game suspension for missing a team flight and was suspended indefinitely for refusing to come off the bench once his previous suspension was lifted.
The Warriors also solved any issues surrounding Butler’s contract. Charania reported the Warriors and Butler agreed to a two-year, $121 million contract extension that will keep him with Golden State through the 2026-27 season. Charania noted Butler declined his 2025-26 player option to accept the deal.
The Warriors now pair another six-time All-Star and proven high-level playoff performer with Stephen Curry as Golden State looks to make a playoff push in the Western Conference. The Warriors entered Wednesday in 10th place in the West with a 25-24 record, but are just 2 1/2 games out of the sixth spot.
With Butler now out of Miami, he should be able to provide a big benefit to the Warriors and Curry. Butler averaged 17 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.8 assists while shooting 54% from the field and 36.1% from 3-point range in 25 games this season.
