MLB Insider Shares Two Critical Notes On Red Sox Target Alex Bregman
At this point in the MLB offseason, there are only a few major free-agency questions left.
And no offense to Pete Alonso, but the most noteworthy uncertainty at this juncture is where Alex Bregman will end up.
Bregman entered the offseason as one of the best position players on the market, but he’s still without a team as spring training looms. Although there was some speculation that a reunion with the Houston Astros is once again possible, the frontrunners to land Bregman appear to be the Tigers and the Red Sox.
Appearing on the “Baseball Tonight with Buster Olney” podcast, ESPN’s Jesse Rogers passed along Bregman notes about both of those clubs.
“(Detroit general manager) Scott Harris has been very deliberate about building this team,” Rogers said. “I’m not sure he’s ready to make that big leap that Scott Boras wants him to make.”
As for Boston, Rogers shared, “At the beginning of the offseason, I felt like if he was going to leave Houston, he’d be a Red Sox. Like, I feel like his game, his personality would fit Boston.”
There certainly is a natural fit for Bregman at Fenway Park, where Alex Cora’s club needs another right-handed bat and could benefit from a defensive upgrade. It just remains to be seen if the Red Sox will make Bregman an appealing enough offer.
The answer might not be imminent either, as Boras has no problem taking his clients into the deepest depths of free agency.
