Interesting details emerge about Tottenham’s Mathys Tel purchase clause

0 4

According to reports from Germany, Tottenham’s option to buy Mathys Tel could turn into an obligation, but one crucial factor would have to be fulfilled for the Lilywhites to sign the player permanently.

Spurs pull off deadline day masterclass

While Daniel Levy and Tottenham’s recruitment department have understandably come under a lot of criticism throughout the transfer window, they managed to show impressive tact to finalise an agreement for Mathys Tel on deadline day.

According to reports, Spurs now have an option to buy Tel for £45.7m at the end of the season, with the teenager set to sign a six-year deal if the option is activated.

However, some interesting details have now emerged regarding the nature of the agreement between Tottenham and Bayern, with some conditions having to be fulfilled for Tel to become a Spurs player on a permanent basis.

Mathys Tel to Tottenham will depend on the player himself

This update comes from Sky Sports Germany reporter Kerry Hau, who explains that while Tottenham do have an option to buy, the clause could become an obligation to buy if Tel plays a certain number of matches before the end of the season.

Hau does not say how many matches the forward would have to play for the condition to change, but he makes it clear that Tottenham can only sign the 19-year-old permanently if the player agrees to join in the summer.

The journalist offers further context by explaining that in many cases, the decision on whether or not to activate an option to buy lies entirely with the club, with the player’s consent not holding any weight.

However, on his occasion, the structure of the deal means that the Frenchman will have to agree at the end of the season for the permanent option to become active.

Will Tel change his mind about a permanent Spurs switch?

Tel evidently did not want to make a permanent switch to Tottenham in January, presumably because he either believes he can still make it at Bayern or that he could get better offers in the summer.

Spurs have taken a smart gamble and would be hoping that the forward can change his mind if he plays for a few months as a part of Ange Postecoglou‘s frontline.

The Lilywhites will have to have an impressive four months and prove to Tel that he can fulfil his ambitions at N17 in order to change the winger’s mind.
