MLB Insider’s Blue Jays Insight Might Be Encouraging For Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox made strides to improve from last season, and the Toronto Blue Jays weren’t far behind.
Toronto’s offseason was highlighted by stars it missed out on. However, after losing the Juan Soto and Corbin Burnes sweepstakes, the Jays signed Anthony Santander and Max Scherzer to help them compete in the American League East. They’ve also been linked to Pete Alonso and Alex Bregman, which could help them retain Vladimir Guerrero Jr. However, a top MLB insider doesn’t believe it will be that simple.
“The Toronto Blue Jays’ luxury tax payroll, by FanGraphs’ estimation, stands at $273.3 million. Which raises the question: Are the Jays willing to sign a prominent free agent such as Alonso or Bregman and extend first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., a combination of moves that might put them over the highest luxury tax threshold?” The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal wrote.
Boston would be in a win-win situation no matter what happens. Toronto might be out on Alonso or Bregman if it prioritizes Guerrero. That’s one less Bregman suitor to worry about, and the Red Sox won’t have to deal with Alonso in the AL East. If the Blue Jays are foolish enough to let Guerrero walk, Boston would have the chance to make a run for him next year.
Alonso and Bregman remain unsigned at the start of February, but Toronto will need to decide quickly its course of action. And as for the Red Sox, they’ll continue to weigh their options with spring training arriving soon.
