Two Trade Ideas That Could Fill Both Red Sox Needs In One Deal

The Boston Red Sox successfully improved the starting rotation this winter when they acquired Garrett Crochet and signed Walker Buehler.

To fully feel good about the roster when spring training arrives in less than two weeks, the Red Sox still need an impact right-handed bat and a late-inning reliever. It may require a more notable return, but why can’t the Red Sox take care of both needs at once?

That’s a very unlikely scenario, but there’s two teams Boston could do that with if the organization is open to such a bold task. Those two teams would be the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Diego Padres.

Let’s explore those options.

CARDINALS
Bat: Nolan Arenado
Reliever: Ryan Helsley

The Arenado rumors surrounding the Red Sox have gone quiet in recent weeks. That’s not to say they wouldn’t pick up based on other moves on the market for position players. Arenado could still fill the need if the Red Sox circle back, but it can also spark a corresponding conversation for Boston.

Helsley enters a contract year after two All-Star nods in three seasons. Placing him with Liam Hendriks, Justin Slaten and Aroldis Chapman as leverage relievers puts Boston in a solid spot for improved bullpen production after a series of second-half blown saves in 2024.

PADRES
Bat: (One of) Xander Bogaerts, Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr.
Reliever: Robert Suarez

The Padres don’t have Juan Soto anymore for a reason. They spent and spent to build a competitive team but ran into financial issues in recent years. They have a trio of impact right-handed bats on massive deals. If San Diego could eat some money, could the Red Sox inquire in a creative format?

Additionally, closer Robert Suarez fell into recent trade discussions and earned plenty of valuable postseason experience and enhanced productions in recent seasons. He could even jump into the closer competition with Hendriks should he join the Red Sox.
