MLB Rumors: Stunning Update In Alex Bregman Sweepstakes

After Alex Bregman rejected an offer from the Astros, who went on to make a few marquee moves, most assumed the star third baseman’s time in Houston was over.

Well, that might not be the case.

Bregman’s free agency has dragged out long enough that the Astros reportedly are back in the race to sign the two-time World Series champion. While general manager Dana Brown still views Bregman as a “long shot” to stay in Houston, others in the game reportedly believe the contrary to be true.

“The Astros are back in the mix for him, and after shedding salary by dealing reliever Ryan Pressly to the Cubs and publicly discussing a potential Jose Altuve move to left field, there’s a sense in the industry Houston is once again a favorite,” MassLive’s Chris Cotillo wrote in a column published Mondy. “The Tigers, Blue Jays and Cubs have been involved as well and Bregman appears to have better offers than what Boston’s willing to give him.”

The Astros reportedly are one of “at least three” teams this offseason to present Bregman an offer with term of five years or longer. The Red Sox might not be one of those clubs, as The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier over the weekend reported Boston has focused on offers no greater than four years in talks with Bregman this offseason.

It might still be a while before Bregman makes his decision, as many other high-profile Scott Boras clients waited until mid-to-late February to put pen to paper in the past. But when all is said and done, it sounds like we shouldn’t be surprised if the two-time All-Star stays in Houston.
