Tottenham still fighting Aston Villa and Galatasaray for centre-back
With the January transfer window nearing its conclusion, Tottenham Hotspur have been backed to agree late Milan Skriniar deal.
Spurs face defensive crisis as January window heats up
Tottenham Hotspur find themselves embroiled in a critical situation at the heart of their defence as injuries to key players have exposed their lack of depth in the squad.
With Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven sidelined, the North London side have been forced to rely on makeshift solutions, including 18-year-old Archie Gray and Radu Dragusin.
In a bid to bolster their defence, Milan Skriniar, the Slovakia international who made a high-profile move to Paris Saint-Germain two summers ago, has reportedly been made available for transfer.
The 29-year-old has struggled to establish himself at the French club, leading to speculation about his future, with Tottenham, Aston Villa, and Galatasaray all expressing interest in securing his services before the end of the month.
Tottenham eye late move for Milan Skriniar
Speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke confirmed that Tottenham are seriously considering a move for Milan Skriniar, describing the defender’s situation as one to “keep an eye on.”
The journalist further states that Skriniar could sign for Spurs this January window. The Slovakian centre-back, who has 77 international caps to his name, could be the solution to Spurs’ defensive woes if an agreement is reached with Paris Saint-Germain in the coming days.
Aston Villa and Galatasaray have also reportedly been alerted to the defender’s situation, adding an extra layer of complexity to the deal.
However, there have been conflicting reports on Tottenham and Milan Skriniar. On the one hand, some say that Spurs are battling Aston Villa for a Skriniar loan deal. On the other hand, some claim that wages proved too much of a stumbling block for Tottenham.
Short-term fix or long-term concern for Tottenham?
Tottenham’s January transfer activity has so far prioritised attacking reinforcements, a somewhat surprising approach given their defensive crisis.
However, as the clock ticks towards the deadline, the focus has shifted to addressing the glaring gaps at the back, with Skriniar emerging as the most viable option to strengthen the team in the immediate term.
Skriniar’s pedigree is undeniable, with a career that includes domestic and European success during his time at Inter Milan.
However, questions remain about his age, with the centre-back set to turn 30 years old next month, it is very likely he is signed on loan and not permanently.
