New Alex Bregman Report Good News For Red Sox’s Pursuit
If the Red Sox want to sign Alex Bregman, now might be the time to pounce.
Bregman entered the MLB offseason as one of the better position players in free agency but doesn’t seem to have a very robust market. If he did, he wouldn’t be approaching his third month lingering on the open market.
Boston and Bregman have been connected in rumors since November, but Detroit was linked to the star third baseman in a similar number of reports. However, it doesn’t seem like the Tigers are anywhere close to signing Bregman.
“The Detroit Tigers remain interested, but negotiations are at a standstill with less than one month until the first full-squad workout in spring training, according to a source with knowledge of the situation,” the Detroit Free Press’ Evan Petzold wrote in a column published Tuesday.
This report bodes well for the Red Sox if they’re interested in the two-time World Series champion. Much like with J.D. Martinez (another Scott Boras client) in 2018, Boston’s chances of adding Bregman might increase as the offseason drifts closer to spring training.
The Blue Jays were expected to be a major player in the Bregman sweepstakes, but Toronto committed quite a chunk of change to power-hitting outfielder Anthony Santander. So, it really might be down to the Red Sox and the Tigers for Bregman’s services.
