The squad needs additions to save Spurs’ season

After a 5th placed finish last season, few would have expected Tottenham to be sitting firmly in the bottom half of the Premier League table come January.

Spurs’ position in their cup tournaments remains positive though. Key matches over the next month against Liverpool, Hoffenheim, Elfsborg and Aston Villa could see Spurs pursue success in the Carabao Cup, Europa League and FA Cup.

The likes of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are set to return during that period. Nevertheless, Tottenham need reinforcements to stand a better chance of progressing in their cup tournaments while improving their Premier League standing at the same time.

Tottenham contact six transfer targets in January

According to TeamTalk, Tottenham are engaged in conversations with six players who they feel could help change the team’s fortunes.

Two positions that are highlighted as a priority are a central defender and a forward. Spurs have been forced into utilising Archie Gray as an emergency centre-back and Djed Spence has spent minutes in recent games covering left-back and centre-back as well.

Tottenham attempted to strike a deal for PSG’s Randal Kolo Muani, but the forward appears to have chosen to move to Juventus. They remain intent on considering the best option amongst a list of out-and-out strikers versus a forward who is capable of playing on the wing.

Despite players returning from injury, Spurs need to reinforce

If Tottenham can learn anything from this disjointed campaign, it is that their squad needs to be able to handle injuries. Romero, Van de Ven and Destiny Udogie have now missed significant chunks in back-to-back seasons.

There may not be space to register new players in the Europa League squad without de-registering, but if Tottenham want to salvage their season, they need to go above and beyond to provide depth and technical ability to the team.

Three or four players may sound excessive, but if the signings prove to be good profile fits for the squad, they could prove to be the difference between a season of profound success or failure.
