Red Sox’s Sam Kennedy Campaigns For More Exciting Offseason Schedule
BOSTON — The Red Sox had a busy month of December with the pitching additions of Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler.
January marks a different tempo as the Red Sox wait on high-level players in the bullpen and right-handed hitting markets. Names like Alex Bregman and Tanner Scott remain, though the markets for those players and positions have yet to move.
Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy expressed a desire to add more to the roster, though he wants to speed up the signing process and negate cold periods such as this current one in January.
“Patience is always a virtue,” Kennedy told reporters at “Fenway Fest” on Jan. 11. “One of the things that I’ve thought about being around for so long now is would there be a way to have a more condensed signing period. I think there’s different views on that. I for one think it would be incredibly exciting for fans, front offices and the market.”
The NFL and the NBA have signing frenzies in March and July, respectively, when free agency opens in each league. Kennedy would love to see such a spree in baseball.
“It’s something I think we should look at,” Kennedy added. “It’s been discussed in the past. Major League Baseball has done such a great job with rule changes. I just wonder if there were a period of time where you could have signings leading into the Christmas period and then we all get a little bit of a break. It’s not this current system, so patience is key.”
