Spurs need greater depth across the pitch

The January transfer window is notoriously complex, with most clubs being unwilling to let their important players leave mid-season.

Tottenham have started the window promisingly by bringing in Antonin Kinsky to cover for Guglielmo Vicario. Vicario is reportedly set to be absent until the end of February alongside Destiny Udogie and Wilson Odobert, who may be out for even longer.

Spurs have reportedly shown interest in bringing a forward to the club. Links to PSG’s Randal Kolo Muani and Marcus Rashford indicate they are looking for a player who they believe can rotate with Dominic Solanke as well as the wide players.

While Richarlison fits this role well, his consistent injury issues are a concern and Spurs would not want to find themselves in a similarly short position after January if Richarlison were to get injured again.

Ang Postecoglou comments on potential Spurs January signing

During his press conference before Spurs’ Premier League match against Arsenal, Ange Postecoglou was asked about the likelihood of new signings arriving during the January transfer window.

Postecoglou said (Football London): “It’s hard to say. Like most other clubs, January is a difficult one to really have any certainty about anything. There are a lot of things which need to come together.

“I think I said last week the club is working really hard in that area and if there are any developments we will let everyone know.”

Reports indicate that PSG are looking for a significant purchase obligation for Muani as a part of any potential loan deal, which ties Spurs’ hands financially in upcoming windows.

However, Spurs reportedly have an advantage in the race for Muani and have even submitted an offer to PSG this week.

Any forward signing in January would need to be a loan

The difficulty facing Tottenham is a player who can cover Brennan Johnson in a manner similar to Wilson Odobert, as well as Dominic Solanke, is incredibly difficult to find.

Randal Kolo Muani could play up front or wide when Spurs are in counter-attacking situations but fundamentally does not solve their problem of needing a wide player who can help to create chances against a low-block defence.

Kolo Muani or even Marcus Rashford may help Spurs’ squad depth in the short term, but Tottenham will not want to be obliged to sign them permanently in the summer.

While many are excited to see Spurs bolster their attacking options, it is imperative that Tottenham sign the right player who can immediately contribute. With so few spaces available in their Europa League squad, Spurs cannot afford to get this signing wrong.
