Tottenham players and Ange Postecoglou were in disbelief

In the build-up to Antony Gordon’s sixth-minute equaliser for Newcastle, the away side won possession as a result of Joelinton’s hand intercepting Lucas Bergvall‘s pass.

The Tottenham players and the coaching staff were livid when VAR decided not to overturn the goal, with the usually calm Postecoglou looking extremely irate on the touchline.

VAR Chris Kavanagh reportedly concluded that Joelinton’s arm was not in an unnatural position, and it thus did not constitute handball.

Postecoglou was far from happy with the decision. Although he did not explicitly refer to that incident, he stated in his post-match press conference that his side would have won the game if it was “an even and fair playing ground”.

Destiny Udogie, who was watching from home as he is currently nursing a hamstring injury, also could not believe what he saw on Saturday.

According to Football.London, the left-back took to social media to write: “VAR what a joke”, only to later delete that post.

If that is not handball, then the rules are wrong

If what we saw on Saturday is not handball, it is clear that the rules of the game have to be changed. If Joelinton had handled the ball in his own box, the incident would not be worthy of a penalty as he did not have his arm in an unnatural position.

However, it happened in Tottenham’s final third and Newcastle gained a huge advantage because of the ball hitting Joelinton’s hands, even if it was unintentional.

Goals are always withdrawn when the ball goes into the back of the net via an attacker’s hand, even if it was unintentional, and the same has to apply for attacking scenarios like the one on Saturday where the goalscoring opportunity arose directly as a result of the ball hitting the hand.
