Tottenham: Always the nearly-men in the transfer window

This report comes from The Daily Mail, and it points out how Spurs have failed to get several big transfers over the line over the years, with many of those moves failing in the final stages.

One of the instances mentioned is the Bruno Fernandes saga back in the summer of 2019, with Spurs unable to agree on the structure of the deal with Sporting Lisbon.

The Portuguese star is thought to have cried in his agent’s office when he knew the transfer was off, only for Manchester United to sign him six months later.

Meanwhile, Spurs also came close to signing Luis Diaz from Porto but were beaten to the finishing line by Liverpool.

Daniel Levy wants Tottenham to be ahead of the curve

The Mail say that this is one of the things Levy and the club’s chief football officer, Scott Munn, are determined to change at N17.

It is to this effect that scouts have been replaced by analysts and data crunchers brought in by new technical director Johan Lange.

Levy is said to be intent on ensuring that Spurs are ahead of the curve when it comes to recruitment, with the 61-year-old wanting to ape the success of the likes of Brighton and Brentford.

Levy’s decisions have not been universally well-received

The outlet says that Levy and Munn’s decisions on the recruitment department have not been well received by everyone at the club.

One source with insider knowledge says about the changes that have been made: “There is some unhappiness.”

However, the same source also admits that Levy is determined to get things right, staying about the Tottenham chairman: “He cares about recruitment. He asks questions. He reads the reports. He does listen.”
