Experienced Tottenham man has stepped up over the last month

When Guglielmo Vicario suffered a fracture in his ankle against Manchester City last month, many Spurs fans would have feared the worst, given how influential the Italian is to the side.

However, Fraser Forster has ensured that the 28-year-old’s absence has not been felt, with the Englishman coming up with many crucial saves and showing that he is still good enough to play at the highest level.

That was until the back-up keeper suffered two howlers against Man United in the Carabao Cup. With Spurs 3-0 to the good, Forster misplaced a five-yard pass to hand the Red Devils a free goal, then doubled their tally when he cleared the ball straight into Amad Diallo.

The former Southampton man’s current deal runs out at the end of the season and an interesting update emerged about his future this week.

Ange Postecoglou makes Fraser Forster decision for Tottenham

GiveMeSport have revealed that despite Forster‘s impressive displays before the Man United game, Postecoglou does not plan on keeping the goalkeeper at the club beyond this season.

It is explained that Spurs have already begun looking for a long-term replacement for the Englishman, with the Lilywhites said to be looking far and wide, including across Europe, in Brazil and even the United States.

However, the outlet claims that Tottenham will resist the temptation to sign a goalkeeper in the January window and will wait until the summer to make the signing.

That has not stopped the club from drawing up a list of targets right now, with the North London side thought to be closely studying different options.

Why Postecoglou wants to look beyond Forster

GiveMeSport explain that Postecoglou and other influential figures at Tottenham have concerns about the Fraser Forster’s distribution. The Man United game would appear to support that hypothesis.

The Tottenham head coach is said to want a long-term replacement who is stronger in possession to facilitate playing out from the back, which is not seen as the England international’s strength.

However, it is suggested that any goalkeeper who comes in next summer will be Vicario’s understudy, with Postecoglou planning to continue with the former Empoli man as his number one.
