Would Firing Jerod Mayo Be Best For Patriots QB Drake Maye?

NFL teams typically try to avoid turnover for the sake of a young franchise quarterback. Consistency is key when it comes to developing a player at the most important position in all of sports.

The Patriots, however, might feel inclined to make a significant change after the 2024 campaign.

It’s been a brutal first season at the helm in New England for Jerod Mayo, who was hand-picked by owner Robert Kraft to be Bill Belichick’s successor. Everyone knew wins were going to be tough to come by for Mayo and company in 2024, but other apparent objectives seemingly haven’t been accomplished. Very few young players have developed and Mayo has worsened the overall situation with regular missteps behind microphones.

So, should New England cut ties with the former linebacker after only one season? And more specifically, would it be in Drake Maye’s best interest to have a new head coach once his rookie campaign concludes?

NESN’s George Balekji and Sean McGuire tackled that question on the latest episode of the “Foxboro Rush” podcast. While McGuire believes the Patriots should make one specific coaching change over the offseason, Balekji recommended an even more significant shuffle for New England with hopes of turning the tides starting in 2025.

You can hear all of McGuire’s and Balekji’s thoughts on the matter in the YouTube video embedded above. And you can listen to the latest “Foxboro Rush” episode in full by clicking the link here.
