Ben Davies names Spurs player who is a ‘nightmare for defenders’
Tottenham Hotspur’s season has been a story of ups and downs, but one player is emerging as a vital piece of the puzzle.
Brennan Johnson’s growing impact could hold the key to turning the tide for Spurs this season.
A season of mixed fortunes
As Tottenham Hotspur navigate a turbulent 2024/25 season, their campaign has been a patchwork of promise and frustration. Sitting 10th in the Premier League after 11 games, the Lilywhites have shown glimpses of brilliance, winning five matches, but inconsistency has cost them, with five losses and one draw tarnishing their league efforts. However, in cup competitions, the story has been different.
Spurs are finding joy in the Europa League, where they are poised to progress from the group stage, and the Carabao Cup has brought its own share of optimism.
A dramatic victory over reigning Premier League champions Manchester City secured a spot in the quarter-finals, providing fans with a glimmer of hope amidst league struggles. But amid the team’s fluctuating form, one player is beginning to make a name for himself.
Brennan Johnson, the Welsh winger signed in the summer of 2023, has shown flashes of brilliance that offer a reason for excitement. At just 23 years old, he has tallied eight goals in his last 14 appearances for club and country.
For Spurs, he has already netted four times in the Premier League the joint-most for any Spurs player this season.
The story of Brennan Johnson’s rise
Brennan Johnson’s journey with Tottenham hasn’t been without its challenges. He has had periods where he failed to perform at his best for the club, but the resilience he has shown in bouncing back is what makes him a standout player. His ability to adapt and seize key moments has been praised by teammates, particularly in light of his impressive seven-match scoring streak earlier in the season.
His teammate Ben Davies while on International duty with Wales, spoke about Johnson’s development and importance to the team, as relayed by The Sun, saying:
“When you come into the team at international level it does take a bit of time to get going. You make a few substitute appearances at the start but now Brennan’s got a pretty settled position in the team. We know how dangerous he can be and if we want to be successful, he’s definitely going to be a big part of that.
“He’s blessed with pace and that’s a nightmare for defenders — he’s a proper difficult opponent. I’d much prefer to have him on my team. He’s a player that the moment you switch off, he can take advantage because he’s so disciplined in his positioning and timing. It was a matter of time before it all clicked.
“He creates chances and always looks threatening. He works hard, he’s a great guy and he deserves his success. I’m absolutely delighted for him. If he keeps putting the ball in the back of the net, then that’s all we can ask for.”
With glowing praise and mounting performances, Johnson has started to justify his place in Postecoglou’s plans.
Johnson’s consistency is key to Spurs’ success
For Tottenham, Johnson’s potential to maintain his current form could be pivotal to overcoming their Premier League struggles.
The winger has the attributes to thrive in Postecoglou’s attacking system, with his pace and discipline making him an ideal fit for the high-tempo football Spurs are striving to achieve.
For Postecoglou, getting the best out of Johnson might be the spark needed to turn Tottenham’s mixed campaign into one filled with renewed hope and ambition.
