The International break is always a risky time for clubs

Every fan enjoys a player from their club performing well on the international stage. It’s an opportunity for vindication. Fans of other clubs are getting to perceive how good ‘your’ player is.

However, the risk of indulging in such hubris is that international football has the uncanny habit of injuring players at the most inopportune moment. It is especially frustrating when an international team displays a lack of care with a player who has only just returned from injury, causing them to potentially exacerbate the issue.

Tottenham fans now face an anxious wait to see the extent of an injury lay-off awaiting their vice-captain.

Cristian Romero could be an injury doubt to face Manchester City

According to reporter Gastón Edul on X: “Cuti Romero will undergo tests.
He played with pain in his right foot. He is at risk of not playing on Tuesday.”

This was in reference to Cristian Romero having been forced off at the half time interval during Argentina’s 2-1 defeat to Paraguay last night.

Romero sustained an injury to his right foot during Tottenham’s 4-1 win against Aston Villa which saw him forced to miss the Europa League defeat at Galatasaray.

Despite returning to the Tottenham starting eleven for Sunday’s loss to Ipswich, it appears that the defender was not fully recovered from the issue with his early withdrawal in the World Cup qualifier.

You cannot play for your country if you are not fit

In a week where Harry Kane lamented players withdrawing from international duty, Romero has shown exactly why many players sit out to protect themselves. In contrast, we saw manager of South Korea, Hong Myung-bo, display care and consideration around the fitness of Song Heung-min, subbing him off at 64 minutes.

Ange Postecoglou has recently implemented this approach in recent games to ensure Sonny stays available.

Every player wants to play for their country, but it is self-destructive to push yourself to play in international games only to get injured, missing both international fixtures and club matches as well.

Tottenham will have to hope this injury to Romero is only enough to see him miss Argentina’s game against Peru and not Spurs’ trip to Manchester City next weekend.

While Radu Dragusin is actually well-suited to that kind of fixture, with Micky van de Ven also out with a hamstring issue, Tottenham cannot afford for Romero to be absent for too long, with a tough run of fixtures in December to come.
