Club director proud of Spurs player’s rise to top-flight football in recent years
A sporting director of an Italian club is delighted with the steps that one Tottenham star is taking, insisting that the player is deserving of the success which he is now experiencing.
Journey from the lower leagues to Spurs
Guglielmo Vicario started his career in the fourth division of Italian football and has had to work extremely hard to make it to the highest level.
The 28-year-old’s rise has been dramatic, especially over recent years, going from a relatively unknown quantity to now being the first choice between the sticks for Spurs, and pushing Gianluigi Donnarumma for Italy’s number one shirt.
It is perhaps that journey which has instilled in the Italian an impressive work ethic and professionalism, which Ange Postecoglou cited as the reasons why the goalkeeper has now been added to the club’s leadership ground (The Standard).
Director not surprised by Guglielmo Vicario’s success
Sporting director Giorgio Perinetti, who signed the keeper at Venezia, has now explained how he first spotted and secured the Tottenham number-one.
When asked about his experience working with Vicario, he told TuttoSport: “When I arrived at Venezia I had recently lost my wife. I felt the need to get involved, to accept a challenge to try to fill that void. In Serie D there is the problem of young players, each team had to field at least four under-21s.
“They told me about this goalkeeper owned by Udinese who already had a Serie D championship behind him. It was summer, and the boy was on retreat with Pordenone.
“Thanks to a tip, I discovered that the club had not yet signed him and so I immediately rushed in, bringing him to Venezia for free. His journey was not the fastest, but it is the result of the many steps that led him to become the player he is now.”
When asked how he feels to see the 28-year-old succeeding at the highest level, Perinetti said: “An indescribable emotion. I have always sponsored him, he is an extraordinary guy, and he deserves the best.”
Vicario’s drive to be the best – but he has work to do
The Spurs number one has not been handed anything on a silver platter and has had to work extremely hard to get where he has.
In that sense, his journey is similar to Postecoglou’s, which is why both men have such determination to succeed at the highest level.
Vicario will certainly not rest on his laurels and will be eyeing the Azzurri’s number-one shirt, however, he must really work at his physical presence on defensive set pieces which has been his downfall since moving to North London.
