United get big boost to sign £63m star after Barcelona & Arsenal end interest - opinion

0 3

Manchester United have been handed a huge boost in signing Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres with Barcelona and Arsenal no longer interested in him.

The Red Devils have had a frustrating start to the Premier League campaign and this has been largely due to their poor finishing. They have netted only 12 goals from 11 games.

Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have misfired up front and new manager Ruben Amorim could target another marquee striker next summer if the duo don’t improve under him.

Amorim could prefer a reunion with Gyokeres and United have been handed a big boost with the likes of Arsenal and Barcelona distancing themselves from the 26-year-old star.

Barcelona sporting director Deco recently said that the club are happy with the progress of Robert Lewandowski and they are not considering Gyokeres despite his scoring record.

Arsenal have been linked with Gyokeres for some time, but Con Harrison has claimed that Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak is the number one forward target for manager Mikel Arteta.

Taking this into regard, United could potentially have a free run at signing Gyokeres, who has established himself as one of the most fearsome strikers in world football over the past 18 months.

The 26-year-old was sensational in his debut campaign for Sporting with 43 goals and 15 assists from 51 games. He has carried over the form this term with 23 goals and four assists in 18 outings.

Gyokeres has proved that he is not a one-season wonder and United could seriously consider reuniting him with Amorim if Hojlund and Zirkzee continue to struggle to find the back of the net regularly.

The marksman has a £83 million release clause in his contract, but Sporting are ready to sell him for £63m next summer. United could emerge as favourites due to Amorim’s relationship with Gyokeres.
